A few small things

None of these are urgent, and if it's easier to cover it when we get together, that works too.

  • How you'd like your credit to read — name, business name, or both. We'll use it everywhere your work appears.
  • Website, Instagram, and how someone hires you — runs at the end of the feature and online.
  • A one-line bio — or we'll write one from your answers for you to approve.
  • Your logo — PNG with a transparent background, if you have one handy.
  • Your okay to run the images — a line by email is fine. You keep the copyright, nothing is exclusive, and we're not licensing or reselling anything.

Sending them

Full resolution straight out of your export if that's no trouble — email compression eats the detail. Dropbox, Drive, WeTransfer, or a drive we pick up.

High-quality JPEG is plenty. TIFF or RAW welcome too.

Where the photographs go

Send what you've got and skip what you haven't — we'd rather have three frames you love than ten you had to go hunting for.

One separate thing — feel free to say no

Dillon's feature runs a page or two before yours and we're light on water shots. If you've got surf or Gulf frames you'd let us use, they'd run with your credit. Completely separate from your feature, and not something we're counting on.

Your feature, continued

The portfolio strip

A few of your frames running along the bottom of the spread. Three is plenty, more if you feel like it. Variety reads better than consistency — a wide, a detail, something with a person in it.

These run small, so images with one clear subject hold up better than wide scenes with a lot going on.

The body of the article lives here — roughly eight hundred words built from the answers you sent back. This is dummy text standing in for it, so you can see how the column sits beside the portrait.

We write it in your voice, using your own words rather than marketing language. Nothing runs before you've read it and given us the nod.

A line lifted from your answers sits here as a pull quote.

The story continues past the quote and lands on your work — where people find you, what you're shooting next, how to get hold of you.

3 You, working Vertical if you have one. Camera in hand, on location, rather than a headshot against a wall. If there's nothing like that in your files, we're happy to come out and shoot it.

Caption runs here — we'll draft it, you approve it.

Five

2 Opening photograph Horizontal, edge to edge above the headline. Whichever frame you'd want people to see first — your call entirely, since you know your own work better than we do.

The Maker

Through a Lens

A short opening paragraph setting up who you are and why this coast looks different through your lens. Written from your interview answers — placeholder text so you can see the shape of it.

A note for Shane

Your answers are in and we're building the feature around them. Before we go further, I wanted you to see the actual thing rather than just hear me describe it.

All of this is layout, not final art. The red boxes are where photographs sit. None of it is a to-do list for you — it's here so that if you already have something that fits, you'll recognise it when you see it. Whatever you don't have, we work around.

1 Cover photograph Vertical, with open sky or water at the top for the masthead and a quiet lower-left for the cover lines. The issue leads on October here — lower light, thinner crowds, water still warm.
